We Are Number One!

With checkered flag waving, Michigan once again finished in first place to lead the nation in unemployment. Figures released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the car capital leading the nation with an unemployment rate of 11.6 percent for January, easily trumping South Carolina, who finished with 10.4 percent.

"We blew past Mississippi a few years ago and never looked back," boasts 2-term Governor Jennifer Granholm. She credits strategic planning and strong execution for enabling Michigan's consistent first-place record. "Maintaining a higher jobless rate than Mississippi - even in good times - doesn't happen by accident. It takes hard work and planning."

Partnership with some of the largest trade unions is also a factor. "We created an environment where an investor would have to be a lunatic to set up shop here," adds House Speaker Andy Dillon, "and by doing so, we preserve Michigan's natural beauty."
